The quality assurance systems continue to report satisfactory outcomes. The institutional metrics continue to indicate that the certification system is functioning as designed. Nothing in the observable institutional record indicates that anything has changed.
The collapse will not look like failure. It will look like uninterrupted success.
Until the novel situations arrive.
And when they arrive, the failure is not gradual, not partial, and not correctable through the institutional mechanisms that govern normal professional practice. It is sudden — occurring at the specific moment when genuine structural competence is required and is not there. What Institutions Cannot Do Alone
The institutional response to this diagnosis will be predictable, and it will be insufficient.
Institutions will increase examination rigor — making performance standards higher, assessment more demanding, credentialing processes more comprehensive. This response addresses the measurement problem by measuring performance more carefully. It does not address the structural problem that performance is no longer a reliable proxy for genuine structural competence. More rigorous measurement of the wrong thing produces more confident certification of the wrong outcome.
Institutions will implement AI detection systems — attempting to identify when AI assistance was used in examination conditions and excluding AI-assisted performance from credentialing.
